The Jackson-Madison County Library houses the Tennessee Room which provides a special collection devoted to genealogical and local historical research. In addition to over 5000 books and a vast microfilm collection, the Tennessee Room also contains Tennessee Census schedules (1810-1930), newspapers beginning in 1823, as well as maps, funeral records, and photographs. The Tennessee Room maintains a close working relationship with the Mid-West Tennessee Genealogical Society and has a complete set of back issues of their publication, Family Findings.
Denmark (outside Jackson) is said to be the oldest Anglo town in West Tennessee, dating roughly to the 1818 treaty that Andrew Jackson signed for the land with the Chickasaw tribe. Most of the area was settled on land grants during the 1820s at three cents an acre. Today, the little town’s crown jewel is the Denmark Presbyterian Church.
Ancestors of the Century Farm Winery came from North Caroline in 1830 and cleared the land on which the present-day winery exists. Roses, antique Daylilies, and the state flower, the Iris, are scattered throughout the scenic grounds. Originally the Spivey Farm, it now gets its name because of its designation as a “Tennessee Century Farm” by the Center for Historic Preservation. Tennessee was one of the leading wine-producing states prior to prohibition.
West Tennessee Farmers’ Market is a great destination for experiencing a traditional farmers markets. Fresh produce, honey, handmade soaps, farm direct cheese, and artisan chocolates are just a few of the offers at the local market. Grab a bite from one of the local food trucks and shop the crafters. The market is open Tuesday through Saturday from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m.
